Leonardo da Vinci: The Genius
Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the most brilliant minds in history.
Born near Florence, Italy, he is widely recognized as one of the greatest artists, inventors and scientists of all time. It has been said that he epitomized the term “Renaissance Man” more than any other person in history.
Around 1482, he began to paint his first commissioned work, The Adoration of the Magi, for Florence's San Donato, a Scopeto monastery.
Leonardo da Vinci's total painting is really rather small; there are less than 20 surviving paintings that can be definitely attributed to him, and several of them are unfinished. Two of his most important works, the Battle of Anghiari and the Leda, neither of them completed, have survived only in copies.
Leonardo’s life was marked by accomplishments in art, engineering, anatomy, geology and more. In the realm of art, he created some of the most iconic works of all time: The Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. He also pioneered a technique known as "sfumato", which allowed for subtle shading of colors to create a three-dimensional effect.
Leonardo was also an accomplished engineer, designing everything from war machines to flying machines (though some of his designs were never constructed).
He studied anatomy in great detail and created detailed renderings of the human body using his observations. In addition, he made discoveries in geology and astronomy, such as the fact that the moon reflects light from the sun.
Sadly, Leonardo da Vinci passed away in 1519 at the age of 67. However, his legacy lives on through his works of art and scientific discoveries.
His detailed drawings are still studied by scientists today and his iconic works of art continue to inspire people around the world.
The world will forever be indebted to Leonardo da Vinci for his contributions to science and art. He truly was one of the most brilliant minds in history.
