Pottery Painting: A Guide for Acrylics

Welcome to our guide on how to paint ceramic pottery with acrylic paint! Acrylic is a great medium for painting ceramics, as it is relatively easy to use and can produce beautiful results.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when painting ceramics with acrylic paint is to make sure that the surface is clean and free of any dirt or debris. If the surface is not clean, the paint will not adhere properly and the results will be "less than ideal" to say the least. To clean the surface, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth or use a mild soap and water solution.

But before painting, first you need to know what kind of ceramic you are planning to paint.

Types of Ceramic

The type of ceramic you use will affect the kind of paint you can use. Different ceramics have different reactions to various paints, so it's important to know what kind of ceramic you're working with.

Greenware ceramic: is a type of ceramic that has not been fired in a kiln. It is quite delicate and can break easily. Greenware is not waterproof and will soften if exposed to water. This means that it needs to be handled with care. Acrylic paint can be applied to greenware pieces, but you cannot use acrylic paint if you plan on firing the greenware in a kiln at a later point.

Bisque Ceramic: If you take greenware and fire it in a kiln, you will get bisque. The process of firing means that the bisque is stronger than greenware but it still isn’t completely waterproof. The porosity of bisque makes it ideal for painting, as the surface easily absorbs paint to create a strong bond. Acrylic paint can be used but should not be if you plan on firing the bisque later.

Glazed Ceramic: Glazed ceramic is made by applying a colored glaze to bisque and then firing it in a kiln a second time but at a higher temperature. Glazed ceramic is very strong and waterproof. To paint on glazed ceramic, you may need to sand or prime the surface first. The best paints to use are bake-on ceramic paint markers or bake-on epoxy.

Now that you know your ceramics and once the surface is clean, you can start painting!

When using acrylic paint on ceramic pottery, it is important to use a primer before applying the paint. This will help the paint to adhere to the surface better and prevent any bleed-through. Once the primer is dry, apply the paint in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry completely before adding the next.

Once you paint your design onto the ceramic and you are happy with how it looks, you can leave it to dry and cure for around 24 hours. While the acrylic will dry within an hour in optimal conditions, it is best to allow a day or so to cure before attempting to handle it.

When you are finished painting, you will need to seal the paint to protect it from moisture and wear. There are many different types of sealers available, but we recommend using a clear acrylic sealer. This type of sealer will not only protect the paint from damage but will also give the piece a nice glossy finish.

Voilà!

We hope you found this guide on how to paint ceramic pottery with acrylic paint simple and helpful! With just a little bit of practice, you will be able to create beautiful works of art that can last for years to come (the kind you can give as gifts to your relatives
