Romanesque Art: The "Relating to Roman" Art

The Romanesque period is an epoch in the history of art which spanned from the 10th to the 12th centuries. It was characterised by a particular style of architecture, sculpture and painting that originated in the early medieval period in Western Europe. The term derives from the Latin romanicus, meaning “relating to Roman” and was used to refer to the architecture of this period.

The Romanesque art style was highly popular in many countries across Europe during this period, such as Germany, France, Italy and England. The most common materials used for creating artworks were stone, brick, tile and wood. Key features of this style include a preference for round arches and thick walls to create grandinform structures, as well as the use of decorative elements including ornamental sculptures and frescoes.

Popular artworks from this period include, The Gondola Chapel in Venice, the Basílica de Santa María del Naranco in Spain and the Abbey Church of Saint-Savin sur Gartempe in France. Many frescoes were created during this period, including some of Giotto's works from the Arena Chapel in Padua.

Notable artists from the Romanesque period include Cimabue, one of the first great Italian painters and sculptors of the 13th century, and his pupil Giotto. Other influential painters include Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Duccio di Buoninsegna.

Today, the Romanesque style has been revived in modern artworks such as installations, public sculptures and architecture. It continues to inspire and influence many contemporary art forms. The Romanesque period thus remains a significant part of the history of art and continues to inspire artists across the world.
