Grid Method for Drawing
Since ancient times, people have used the Grid Method as an artistic tool to make their drawings more accurate.
The Egyptians would use a string soaked in red dye to create grid lines on their surfaces, while Renaissance artists would hammer nails into a wooden frame and attach strings between them.
Throughout history renowned artists such as M.C. Escher, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albrecht Durer and Van Gogh have all used the Grid Method for their work.
The invention of the camera has made this technique easier to use as artists can now print out photos and draw grid lines directly on them or lay a transparent film over the top.
This allows for a much more precise drawing.
To use the grid method:
1. Print a picture or draw an image onto a surface.
2. Mark out even divisions in the x and y directions to create a grid. Use a ruler to keep your lines straight.
3. Examine the picture closely, noting down important features such as shapes, shadows and outlines in each grid box.
4. Draw the outlines of the picture more accurately by connecting the marks you’ve made within each grid box.
5. Erase your guide lines and add in any extra details such as shading or color to complete the drawing.
With the Grid Method, it is possible to create accurate and detailed drawings with minimal effort. So why not give it a try today?
Happy drawing! :)
