What Are The Elements of Art?

Art can be one of the most beautiful and captivating things to behold. But, what is it really made up of? What are the elements of art and why do they work together to create a masterpiece?

The Elements of Art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art. These seven elements, which are line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color are combined to create a piece of art that is harmonious in its beauty.

Line: is the use of a continuous mark made on a surface by a moving point or object. Lines can be used to define shapes, outline forms, suggest movement and describe contours. They create a sense of depth and can be used to express emotions.

Shape: is two-dimensional, meaning it has only length and width. Shapes are created by lines, and can also be organic – or free form – in nature, like those found in nature.

Form: is three-dimensional, having length, width, and depth. Forms are created through the manipulation of shapes, or by adding mass to a two-dimensional shape.

Space: is the area around, between, and within shapes and forms. Artists use space in their art as a way to create visual tension, movement, balance and unity.

Texture: gives objects physical characteristics such as roughness, smoothness, transparency, and opacity. Texture can be added to a piece of art through brushstrokes, patterns and the use of various materials.

Value: is the lightness or darkness of an object or area. It helps define form, create texture and give depth to a piece of art.

Color: is how light is reflected off of an object or area. Colors can be warm, cool, muted, vibrant and more. They are used to create moods and emotions, as well as define form and give unity to a piece of art.

The Elements of Art work together to create something that is beautiful in its complexity. Each element is necessary to complete a work of art that is harmonious and captivating.
